His voice has not been heard in Bollywood film songs for a long time, but singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya says he didn’t mind being away from of the limelight.
“I sing only for the superstars, be it Shah Rukh Khan or Ranbir Kapoor. My voice doesn’t suit every actor, and I am fine with that,” says the singer who was a popular playback voice in the ’90s, especially for songs picturised on Shah Rukh such as ‘Mein koi aisa geet’ (Yess Boss, 1997) and ‘Suno na suno na’ (Chalte Chalte, 2003).
Abhijeet has now made a comeback with a song from Ranbir’s upcoming film, Besharam. The track, titled ‘Dil ka jo haal hai’, is a ’90s-style duet which also features singer Shreya Ghosal. The singer reveals that it was director Abhinav Singh Kashyap’s and composer Lalit Pandit’s unanimous decision that he should sing the song. “They wanted a fresh, melodious song — something that has been missing from Bollywood in a long time,” says the 54-year-old.
Abhijeet also adds that his contribution to film music will not be forgotten. “Shah Rukh will not be remembered for songs like ‘Lungi dance’ or ‘Chammak challo’, but for his hits from films like Main Hoon Na (2004), Yes Boss and Chalte Chalte,” he says. He last sang for the actor in Om Shanti Om (2007).
