Even though Boman Irani entered the film industry with Everybody Says I’m Fine! (2001), he made a mark only in 2003, when he essayed a pivotal role in Munna Bhai MBBS. “My initial films were experimental. They were in English; one was even shot on a handycam. But when Munna Bhai MBBS happened, I had to give up my day job of a photographer, and since then, I haven’t found the time to go back to my shop,” says the actor.

In his 15-year-long career, one of the constants in Boman’s career has been film-maker Rajkumar Hirani. Apart from the Munna Bhai series, Hirani has also directed the actor in 3 Idiots (2009) and PK (2014). In fact, there are rumours that the film-maker is in talks with Boman for the actor to be part of Sanjay Dutt’s biopic, which will have Ranbir Kapoor in the lead role. “I will do anything to be with Raju. He is great fun to be with. In fact, even though I had a small role in PK, I have no regrets,” he says, adding, “If at all there is something for me [in Sanjay’s biopic] in an organic way, and not because we are friends or because I’m in most of Raju’s films, then that’ll be great. But, there is no rule to be a permanent fixture in his films.”

Apart from acting, Boman wears many other hats. He is a photographer, and also a singer. In fact, he regularly does stage shows. “I have sung with Shankar Mahadevan (composer-singer). I can’t do playback at the moment. I can’t jump ships now. But I will, someday. The point is to always keep exploring,” he says.

We have also come to know that Boman wants to turn director now. Ask him if the news is true, and he says, “It was the first ship I wanted to jump on when I began [my career]. It is a culmination of everything I have been doing – writing, acting, photography, etc. Let’s see if I can pursue it in the future. I believe that cinema is not about the actors; it is a director’s medium.”

On the personal front, Boman is proud of his sons. While the elder one, Danish, has worked as a production manager and assistant, the younger one, Kayoze, is an actor-director. “Both of them are doing well. Kayoze has written a script, and I hope he finds a producer for it. The script reads well. Danish is already on his third film. He worked as a production assistant on 2 States (2014), as a production executive on Kapoor & Sons, and is currently working on (director) Gauri Shinde’s film with Shah Rukh Khan and Alia Bhatt,” says the actor.

On the whole, Boman is in a happy space, and believes that the industry has treated him well. “We always have reasons to be unhappy about things, no matter how good they are. You should just do your best. Till now, I have never had a bad day in the industry. No one has ever disrespected me; nobody has ever taken away my due. At the end of the day, you get what you deserve. If I feel I could have done better, then I should have worked harder,” he says.
