Being a chocolate faced poster boy is easy but to become ugly it takes a big toll of self. Actor Rahul Bhat, who plays the lead in Anurag Kashyap’s next Ugly, tells HT City that to get into his character and for an intense, weird look that his role demanded, he barely slept during the film’s three-month shooting schedule.
“I was sleeping hardly for two-three hours in a day to get the ugly look that the film required. Anurag and I decided that I would deprive myself of sleep to have those natural dark circles, swollen watery eyes and rugged look. From the very start I knew it’s not going to be a cakewalk,” tells Rahul.

He plays a divorced struggling actor whose daughter goes missing and while looking for her he discovers the ugly face of life. “I detached myself from life’s luxuries and comforts. I did not even stay at home.”
Bhat, who has got rave reviews in the Cannes Film Festival and nomination in the New York Film Festival in the best actor category, feels that this would be the turning point of his career. “Even before the release it has yielded me results. After watching Ugly, Sudhir Mishra cast me in Aur Devdas that I extensively shot in Lucknow. I took a break from acting for many years and kept myself engaged in producing TV serials but now I hope that my time has come. We have done our best and it’s up to the audience but for me it has been a very satisfying experience,” says the confident actor.
He admits it’s a dark film. “It’s dark yet very engaging and entertaining. It will connect with every individual as it’s a very emotional story about relationship,” he says.
Talking about his stay in the state capital for Aur Devdas, he says, “I stayed here for two months. Today just the name of Lucknow brings to mind the taste of kebabs and yummy dishes that I enjoyed. We had some wonderful shoot and some of the most beautiful locations I have come across.” In the film Rahul plays the role of Dev(das) which is set in the modern days political scenario.
