Filmmaker Shirish Kunder found himself cornered for a mean jab at Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath, whose elevation to the post has triggered a Twitter explosion with people pouring posies and poison in equal parts.
Some compared the Yogi with Hollywood star Vin Diesel; others criticized his hardnosed Hindu right-wing image. Kunder called him a goon.
“Hoping a goon will stop rioting once he’s allowed to rule is like expecting a rapist to stop raping once he’s allowed to rape,” he tweeted.
And he posted a second: “Going by the logic of making a goon as CM so that he behaves, Dawood can be CBI director. And Mallya - RBI Governor.”
That was Kunder’s response to writer Chetan Bhagat’s tweet after the BJP leadership chose the five-term parliamentarian for Gorakhpur and head priest of Gorakhnath mutt to head the government in India’s most populous and politically sensitive state.
“#YogiAdityanath as UP CM. Because when you make the naughtiest guy in class the class monitor, he behaves the best,” Bhagat had tweeted.
The filmmaker — famous for the 2012 Bollywood sci-fi comedy Joker — deleted his posts after a section of the twitteratti roasted him for his tweets against the Yogi, the BJP leader known to champion a far-right Hindutva agenda. The trolls are still at him.
Meanwhile, the Yogi’s official twitter handle is growing at a rate of about 200 followers a minute.
