If not P.K. or Bombay Velvet, which film will now release on Christmas?

Till a few days back, Christmas weekend was set to see three big films — Aamir Khan’s P.K., Anurag Kashyap’s Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Bombay Velvet and John Abraham’s comic caper Welcome Back— release together.

Now, all three have been moved to different dates, with the latest being Bombay Velvet, leaving the coveted Christmas weekend open. It makes us wonder if the makers — especially those behind P.K. and Welcome Back which are slotted to clash on December 19 — are thinking of reclaiming the Christmas period again.

“We announced December 19 as our release date first. They (makers of P.K.) have come up with the announcement now. So there’s no question of changing it all over again,” says director Anees Bazmee.

Trade analyst Amod Mehra says, “When a big film releases, no one expects exhibitors to take it out within a week’s time. Plus, when a film is made for Rs 100 crore, makers see it earning Rs 200 crore. To make that kind of money, you need a longer run. So, if any film releases on December 25, effectively, it will still compete with the film that released earlier.”

Another trade expert, Taran Adarsh, feels that “December 19 is the best period”.

He says, “Worldwide, celebrations start around that time, so I think the makers of Aamir’s film have made a smart move. As to whether this move will affect John’s film, it’s too early to say.”
