Rohit Shetty has four sisters, but the film-maker is closest to Mehek, who he is 10 years older to. When you meet them, you immediately notice the child-like banter between the two.
During our shoot with them, Mehek’s hair was constantly flying. So when Rohit pointed to his own head to show that he doesn’t share the same worry, she simply said that he was jealous of her locks, and both burst out laughing, as if on cue.
At one point, Rohit even asked the photographer to go on taking pictures, saying that everyone was only going to be looking at him.
This Raksha Bandhan, we catch up with the siblings to learn about their childhood, and their memories of the auspicious day.
Favourite Rakhi gift
Rohit: I don’t exactly remember what gift I gave her.
Mehek: He has given me so many things; the biggest one is when he approved of the guy I wanted to get married to (Navin Shetty).
Rohit: I don’t look broad-minded, but I am . It was not like I didn’t know the guy. I have worked with him for many years. I have started getting clothes for free now, so it was a very good deal for me (laughs).
Who’s the naughtiest?
Rohit: Mehek is the bigger nautanki (drama queen).
Mehek: Yes, I am.
Rohit: Mehek is a big show-off. She doesn’t leave any opportunity to brag about being my sister. In fact, when this article is printed, she will make sure to circulate it around to every household in the country. Once, we were shooting at Ramoji Film City (Hyderabad), when it suddenly started pouring. The entire team was standing under some shade, when we suddenly saw a lady walking under a huge garden umbrella. She wasn’t even carrying it herself; the poor spot boy was following her around the entire studio.
Mehek: Arre, but the spot boy brought the umbrella na.
Mehek: We had a simple, middle-class upbringing. I’ve got the best of things because of him, and I haven’t struggled as much as him. He faced hardships, but he made it easier for me and the rest of the family.
Rohit: Any man would like to his family to get the best of things, and provide whatever he can to them. God has been kind, and I’m very thankful to him.
Rohit: It’s quite obvious that I was mom’s favourite .
Mehek: I had no issues with that.
Rohit: I’m very possessive about everyone in the family. But if you want to know how possessive Mehek is about me, try criticising me.
Mehek: I’m very possessive about him, and I don’t like anyone talking bad about him. I feel like thrashing them. I can do anything for him. He is like my father and my angel. Whatever I am is because of him.
Rohit: In our family, we are all like Sunny Deol in Gadar (2001) — ready to uproot a hand pump. Action is in our blood, and we can’t help it.
