Heard of edible lingerie made from chocolate, phirni, bibingka, paneer tikka, jalebis and Mughlai and Chettinad cuisine? No? But that’s exactly what actor Ash Chandler’s endearing character Savio in debutant director Sandeep Mohan’s Love, Wrinkle-free, wants to sell.

Ash says, “Savio works in an underwear company. He is a dreamer, but not an inventor. So this idea of edible lingerie strikes, which he begins to consider a realistic entrepreneurial dream.”

Ask him if there’s a market for something like this in India, and he jokes, “Yes, but it won’t solve the hunger crisis.” But he adds that there are enough kinky people willing to explore it. The director supports this claim by saying that even the BBC has done a story on how the most conservative countries are the kinkiest.

Sandeep chanced upon the idea during his advertising stint. He says, “What people hide reveals more about them than what they display. It’s fun, and brings people out of their comfort zone.” The director did a lot of research on the lingerie industry for his short film, Bomber Briefs, which was also shot in Goa. That helped him while making this film too.

An NRI himself, Ash, last seen in Guzaarish (2010), was first offered the role of an NRI in the film. But he didn’t want to be typecast and persuaded the director to let him audition for Savio’s role. He says, “I have been in India for 12 years and have spent half that time in Goa. I have a home there. So I already had lots of unintentional research for this part. I even gained nine kilos to make Savio believably ‘susegad’.”

The film also stars Shernaz Patel, Arika, Seema Rahmani and Ashwin Mushran. It released yesterday.
