Former wrestling champion and Hanuman of the Hindi film industry, Dara Singh, 83, died at his Juhu residence on Thursday morning five days after he suffered a severe cardiac arrest, doctors said.
He was admitted at the intensive care unit (ICU) of the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital (KDAH), Andheri and his family decided to take him home on Wednesday after his condition worsened.
Singh was cremated on Thursday afternoon. He is survived by his wife, three sons and three daughters. One of his sons, Vindu Dara Singh, is also an actor.
His actor-son Vindu Singh said: "The angel has now gone to shine like a star up above".
"Dara Singh passed away at 7.30 am on Thursday morning," said Dr Ram Narain, executive director, KDAH. "He had a cardiac arrest at home on July 7. When he was brought to our emergency room, he had to be resuscitated. He suffered irreversible brain damage because of a lack of bloody supply and oxygen to his brain. A day later, his kidneys failed and he was put on dialysis," said Dr Narain.
Singh had been on ventilator since then. The family took him home late Wednesday night. "They wanted him to be at home during his last hours. We made him as comfortable as possible," said Dr Narain.
The funeral was held at Ville Parle, on Thursday afternoon and was attended by several Bollywood personalities. Dharmendra and Abhishek Bachchan visited the family at their Juhu residence.
Born in 1928, the six-feet-two-inch-tall wrestler was part of more than 200 films. His memorable works includes Tarzan, King Kong and Faulad. He has been part of more than 200 films. Singh also owned a film company and a studio in Punjab.
As a wrestler, Singh participated in over 500 fights, and won several awards and titles in the course of his career.
