Dev Anand, the Bollywood actor with the longest shelf life, died after a heart attack in a central London hotel on Saturday night. He was 88.

"It is with great sadness that the family of Mr Dev Anand announces his death," his British representative Kenny Muir said in a statement on Sunday.

"He passed away in his sleep last night from a sudden cardiac arrest. The family requests privacy until further announcements are made."

The veteran actor's son Sunil was with him at the Washington Hotel in London's posh Mayfair neighbourhood when he passed away around 3.30am on Sunday (Indian time). Dev had come to London for a medical check-up after feeling unwell.

Paramedical staff, who rushed to the hotel in ambulances, was unable to revive him, family friends said.

The evergreen hero is expected to be cremated in London this week, after the rest of the family - wife Kalpana and daughter Devina - arrive in London.

With a large circle of friends and admirers - as well as family - in London, Dev had made the British capital his second home.

His sister - mother of celebrated filmmaker Shekhar Kapur - lives in London, as does Kapur himself.

"He felt welcome here," said documentary filmmaker Nasreen Munni Kabeer, who curated a season of Dev Anand films for Britain's Channel 4 television earlier this year.

"We filmed an interview to introduce the season, and even then he appeared quite frail."
