Irrfan Khan and Aparna Sen will be among the celebrities attending the opening night of the 7th Abu Dhabi Film festival on Thursday.
While Irrfan Khan-starrer Qissa, among other Indian works, will be part of the country’s cinema centenary celebration here, Aparna Sen will present her The Jewel Box.
Riche Mehta will showcase Siddharth, while M.S. Satyu will offer one of India’s best movies on Partition, Garam Hawa.
Jahnu Barua with his The Catastrophe, and tennis-player-turned-film-producer Ashok Amritraj with his Life of Crime will also be seen on the evening’s Red Carpet.
Life of Crime, directed by Daniel Schechter, will open the festival this evening. Starring Tim Robbins and Jennifer Aniston, the movie, adapted from Elmore Leonard’s novel, is a wild entertainer about a kidnap going awry. When two fresh-out-of-jail men abduct a rich American property developer’s wife, they had not bargained that he would have a hot young mistress and be in no hurry to rescue his wife.
Life of Crime will have its Middle Eastern premiere at the festival, which will run till November 2. In fact, the festival will have a record number of Arab movie premieres. Many of them will compete with word cinema in various sections.
Ali Al Jabri, Director of the festival, said on Wednesday: “At the festival, we make a point of having Arab cinema compete head-to-head with international films. This is why we show Arab movies alongside international productions in the main competition sections. As well as bringing the best of world cinema to the UAE, it’s our mission to screen the best of Arab cinema. This is arguably the best year yet".
