Till date, it remains one of the most iconic films ever made in Bollywood. Now, Kundan Shah’s Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (JBDY; 1983) is set for a second inning as the director is planning a sequel to the Naseeruddin Shah-Ravi Baswani starrer. While Naseer is already set to reprise his part from the classic, we have learnt that Irrfan has been confirmed to replace the late Baswani.
“Irrfan has already heard an extensive narration. Once he returns to the city in a couple of days, he will hear the next narration. Actually, he and Kundan had met to discuss some other projects when talks steered towards the JBDY sequel. Plus, Baswani was very close to Irrfan, so he agreed to do the film in principle,” says an industry insider.
Around 2010, Kundan, Naseer and Baswani, just before the latter’s death, had apparently met a few times regarding the sequel. But since the actor passed away, their plans came to a standstill. “Kundan has again started working on the sequel. Now with Irrfan’s nod, things should fall into place faster. Other details are yet to be worked out,” adds the insider.
When contacted, Irrfan says, “I am a big fan of the film. Plus, I have always looked forward to working with Naseer. I find it fascinating that Kundan still has the energy level and excitement of a first-time director.”
Like the original, the sequel is also likely to highlight increasing corruption in India in a satirical manner. Interestingly, Kundan is also planning to bring in most of the original’s star cast, including Satish Shah.
