Is the youth brigade ready to take over Bollywood in next two years?

Of late, there’s been an influx of young talent and star kids in the film industry. Several of them — like Ranveer Singh, Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt, Sidharth Malhotra, Arjun Kapoor, Parineeti Chopra and Tiger Shroff — have been launched by top film-makers, who have collaborated with them in subsequent films as well. And, most of these projects have hit screens this year.

Bankable youngsters

While Karan Johar tasted repeated success with 2 States and Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, Sajid Nadiadwala had Highway, Heropanti and 2 States (co-produced) to his credit. Similarly, Aditya Chopra backed Gunday and Daawat-e-Ishq while Ekta Kapoor had Main Tera Hero and Ek Villain. So, the question is, are Bollywood’s big names banking more on the young guns these days? “It’s not fair to segregate actors as young or old. I strictly go by the requirement of my script. As long as he or she fits the part, I will cast the actor regardless of age,” says Nadiadwala, whose future projects include Sabbir Khan’s next with Tiger Shroff and the Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Tamasha. "As a film-maker, I have worked with their (star kids’) parents. So, it gives me a high when I work with their children," adds Nadiadwala.

Trade-wise

Then, box-office performance is an important factor as well. So, if Arjun Kapoor and Sidharth Malhotra deliver a `100 crore-earner each or if Varun Dhawan gives back-to-back hits, trade feels it inspires confidence among the makers. “Films have a life and destiny of their own. I love making movies, and want to make lots and all kinds. I would like to work with all the talents of the industry,” says Karan, who is slated to make Brothers and the remake of Priceless with Sidharth, as well as The Intouchables remake with Varun.

Money matters

“It’s a clear case of demand and supply. If their films are earning money for their makers, they will be cast more often,” says trade analyst Amod Mehra. Exhibitor-distributor Akshaye Rathi adds that Bollywood makes around 350-400 films every year, and since top five-six names can do about 20 films between them, makers need to cast younger actors to keep churning out movies. “Also, they will charge way less than big names in the industry [ensuring that the project’s budget is within check],” says Rathi.
