After his last release, Yamla Pagla Deewana (2011), actor Sunny Deol will return to the big screen with the film’s sequel. Currently shooting for the movie in the UK with dad Dharmendra and brother Bobby, the actor reveals his future plans.
Tell us a little bit about your new film?
We all play the same characters from the original, but in a completely different story. I am the good guy and they (Bobby and Dharmendra) are the rogues once again.
What made you want to shoot in the UK?
I was looking for a place where there would be lots of Asians living together, so I thought Leicester in the UK would be the perfect place. Also, I was fed up of shooting in London because we keep showing the city in almost every Bollywood film.
You are known to be a very gentle person in real life, but you always play intense characters on screen. As an actor, is it difficult to play such roles?
They are just characters that you portray on camera. They don’t become part of your personality. But it’s difficult for me to be intense in real life.
Do you like acting in comedies?
I enjoy it. Otherwise, it would be boring doing just one kind of thing. When you’re an actor, you should be capable of doing all kinds of roles.
You are also making the sequel to Ghayal (1990). What’s happening on that front?
The script is nearly locked. I want to get it absolutely right before we start working on the project because Ghayal is an iconic film. The sequel has to match up to it.
One thing that connects all your characters on screen is that they are all driven by a sense of righteousness. Do you consciously choose such roles?
I don’t really go looking for such roles. At the same time, I feel it’s very important to find characters that have goodness because films must spread positive messages. When I go to watch a film, I like my hero to be tough but nice too.
Sunny to team up again with Bobby?
Starting next month, Sunny Deol will begin shooting for filmmaker Anil Sharma’s upcoming project. The Veer (2010) and Apne (2007) director had visited Sunny in Leicester for the final narration of the film. The shoot will take place in Bhopal.
“It will be a comedy. Bobby might star alongside Sunny. The makers are trying their best to get both the brothers on board because after Yamla Pagla Deewana and its sequel, it’ll be their third release together,” says a source close to the film. The female lead has not been finalised yet.
