If there’s one actor who remembers to thank God in every second sentence that he utters these days, it’s Ranbir Kapoor. The 29-year-old actor is on cloud nine after the success of his recent release, Rockstar, directed by the very talented Imtiaz Ali. The film is not only raking big moolah at the box office, but has also been widely acclaimed by the critics as Kapoor’s best work, till date.
“It’s unbelievable. And so, so heart warming,” he says, and excitedly adds, “you know, Mr Bachchan wrote a very personalised letter to me, saying he loved my performance. It is simply amazing...don’t know how to thank God.”
Amid the heaps of compliments from the fraternity and family, whose did he like the most? “Oh well,” he says, “my mom watched the film five times. My dad, who is my harshest critic, told me that if he could make one phone call to his father, the legendary Raj Kapoor, it would be to say how proud he is of my performance in Rockstar.”
But even that’s not the best. “My grand uncle Mr Shashi Kapoor has been really unwell and hadn’t watched a film in the last 15 years. But he came to watch this one. And he’s been so unwell that he doesn’t even remember who I am. He turned to the person next to him and said, ‘this young boy has acted very well’. I had tears in my eyes,” he says.
The commercial success of the film has catapulted the actor in the Rs 100 crore club, right now comprising the three Khans (Salman, Aamir and Shah Rukh). “You can’t take my name in the same breath as the Khans,” he says. “They are so senior to me. I’ll be the happiest if I reach even a fraction of where they are.”
