A day after the much-awaited Bollywood clash, it is still not clear who the box-office hero is — Yash Chopra’s dashing army officer or Ajay Devgn’s affable sardarji.
Going by early box office reports, the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Jab Tak Hai Jaan (JTHJ) and actor-producer Ajay Devgn’s action flick, Son of Sardaar (SOS), are going neck and neck.
Trade experts say the two films are set to create history when it comes to collections. “Early predictions suggest they will make Rs 200-225 crore,” says trade analyst Joginder Tuteja.
At the time of going to press, JTHJ, which released across 2,500 screens raked in over Rs 15.23 cr, while SOS playing on 2,000 screens, earned over Rs 10.72 cr.
“At multiplexes, JTHJ’s business is outstanding, while at single screens and mass centres the business of SOS is mindblowing,” says trade expert Taran Adarsh.
Apart from the regular interest in any two films releasing on the same date, what makes this battle worth tracking is the pre-release standoff between Devgn and Yash Raj Films within days of Yash Chopra's sudden death.
Devgn approached the Competition Commission of India (CCI) accusing Yash Raj Films of monopolistic practices and putting pressure on exhibitors to give prominence to JTHJ. Though the CCI dismissed the matter, the controversy continued.
That and the similarities between the two films — both pet projects of two big Bollywood names, both had a grand budget of Rs 50 crore (approximately), a star-studded cast, a common release day and ratings between 2.5 and 3.5 — have the critics, trade experts and the media watching keenly.
Moviegoers, meanwhile, are queuing up for both films. "We've had a 100% occupancy since Tuesday and all our shows are booked till Friday. Right now, it is very difficult to say which one will beat the other in terms of overall collections," says RK Mehrotra of Delite cinemas.

The films' overseas collections tell a different story altogether. Jab Tak Hai Jaan is leading international box offices by a huge margin over Son Of Sardaar.
In the clash of the two biggies - Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Son Of Sardaar - Jab Tak Hai Jaan has raced ahead by a massive margin. Jab Tak Hai Jaan is faring exceptionally well in UK, USA, UAE. and Australia. In New Zealand, where the film opened on Wednesday, the film has created history by being the first Hindi film to open at No 1 position, overtaking the business of Hollywood biggies on Wednesday.
Son Of Sardaar is better than the Ajay Devgn starrers released in the past, but the clash with Shah Rukh Khan in Overseas has hit the film hard. Tamil film Thuppakki is shining in Overseas, despite the overpowering competition posed by Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Son Of Sardaar. Excellent!
