For Vidya Balan, doing the first part of 2012 blockbuster hit Kahaani was the most challenging thing then. “That time Kahaani was most challenging and with age and experience you grow and I knew Durga Rani Singh better. I don’t think I would have been able to do Kahaani 2 four years ago. I am better equipped to do it now,” she said at the trailer launch of Kahaani 2.
Bollywood actor Vidya Balan has said she wants her films do as much business as those of Aamir Khan.
When asked how she feels about the tag of being ‘female’ Aamir Khan, Vidya said, “I hope my films do business like that of Aamir Khan’s films. It’s a huge compliment when someone says that (female Aamir Khan). He knows lot about films and marketing. I believe he is a marketing guru. I haven’t worked with him yet. I think I have a long way to go. I hope my films do that kind of business,” Vidya said at the trailer launch of Kahaani 2: Durga Rani Singh.
The National award winning actress is yet to team-up for a film with the Khans of Bollywood. “May be because I did not have the opportunity. I would like to stand on my own feet. I don’t put my hand on anyone else’s shoulder to stand tall. Not that anyone is doing it don’t get me wrong. I am standing on my own feet and I feel proud about it.”
Post Kahaani, Vidya is yet to taste commercial success and she says she works hard for every film. “I would want all my films to work commercially. I have given my best to every film. With experience you learn that there will be hits and flops but you have to keep going on. If the film doesn’t work it is heartbreaking,” she added.
Coming in an auto-rickshaw at the launch and donning a no make-up look -- in the film as well as at the launch, Vidya looked quite promising at the event.
Talking about her shooting experience, Vidya, who also featured in the 2012 film Kahaani, said: “We went to a small place in Kalimpong (West Bengal) for shooting. I think since the place is a little isolated, we managed to keep it a secret. It is a thriller film. So, one should know everything only when watching the film.”
In the film, Vidya is playing the character of Durga Rani Singh who unveils the dark past of Vidya Sinha (that she played in Kahaani), which links her to Durga Rani Singh, a criminal on the run for kidnapping and murder.
“I did not take onus of doing women-centric films. We have good writers today and the credit goes to them for a good story. I was lucky to be at right place doing right thing. Sujoy and I wanted to work together for a film but it did not work out. Then I had health issues so I went on break. Sujoy and I love flighting but when we work together we give our best. We were not talking to each other when we started talking again we did Te3n and Kahaani 2,” Vidya said.
The National Award-winning actress said she approached the sequel to Kahaani as a new story, new film. “When Sujoy and I decided to make this film we thought we will take it as a new movie. It’s a new story. We will not take the pressure as then we will be constantly compared to the first film. It’s a new story and we have approached it in a new way. Kahaani has got love from audience so it benefits the second part,” she added.
In the sequel, the Paa actress will be seen in a de-glam avatar. “Sujoy wanted realistic look. We had low make up look. I don’t have issues with make up,” she said.
In an innovative way to promote the film the makers put the posters of “Wanted Durga Rani Singh” featuring Vidya Balan as a criminal across the city. “I got very good response. A maid at my place felt I am in trouble after looking at the poster, another girl felt Durga Rani Singh is a criminal. I think we succeeded in creating buzz,” she said.
Sujoy Ghosh’s Kahaani 2: Durga Rani Singh releases on December 2.
