Karan Johar’s Student Of The Year (SOTY; 2012) might become the latest movie to join the list of famous film franchises in Bollywood. According to an industry insider, the director, whose movie was one of the highest grossing productions of last year, wants to release a new SOTY film every two years.
“The concept of the school competition, which the movie revolves around, will remain the same, but the challenges, the characters and the story will change with each film. Karan also plans to launch new faces with every instalment of the franchise. The response that SOTY got was encouraging,” reveals the insider.
Thrilled with the movie’s box-office success, Karan’s production house, Dharma Productions, apparently feels this will be a smart way to produce entertaining films and simultaneously create a launch-pad for newcomers. The source adds, “The second version of SOTY, if all goes well, should release by next year.” While Karan directed SOTY himself, the insider reveals there is no certainty on whether he will be helming all the films in the franchise. “He’s open to letting directors come on board too. He has already laid the foundation by directing the first film,” adds the source.
Despite repeated attempts, Karan remained unavailable for a comment.
