Arjun Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor in a still from Ki and Ka.

First things first: Watch Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Kapoor’s Ki and Ka’s trailer, out today, before it ruffles right wing feathers and is pulled down. Why? Because, this two-and-a-half-minute long video is all about subverting gender notions and equations.

It starts with Arjun denying that Kia (Kareena) is the man in his relationship. “Kia ek ladKI hai aur mai ek ladKA hun, Par apki confusion samajh sakta hun. Ghar sambhale to KI, bahar jakar kaam kare to KA, according tio Hindustani sabhyata!”

The couple continues on the same note: They take pains to explain how the hero is not gay, that he simply wants to take care of his house, just like his mom. Our heroine, we are told, is ambitious and wants to reach the top of the corporate ladder. In between, we also have the mandatory “you don’t have any feelings” talk, just that it is the guy who is ranting here.

Arjun Kapoor plays a ‘house-husband’ in Ki and Ka.

The trailer also has time to bring in the society here. We have characters asking Arjun, “Pagal ho gaye ho? Aurat ki kamaai pe jeena chahte ho? Mard ho tum, agar bhool gae ho to andar jaake chaddhi utar ke check kar lo!” Right from cooking to taking off the wife’s shoes, the protagonist is doing everything a susheel, sanskari wife is expected to do in our Hindustani sabhyata.

However, a few scenes had us bothered: We see Kareena slapping Arjun and in another she tells him ‘bhaad me jaye tera sir’ when he refuses to have sex with her, claiming he has a headache. Here’s hoping they don’t end up making it a role reversal in every sense.

R Balki’s Ki and Ka is a romantic story where Arjun essays the role of a house husband, while the Jab We Met actor, who is starring opposite the 30-year-old, plays the role of an ambitious career-oriented woman.

The film, which follows the relationship of the married couples, also features Amitabh Bachchan and wife Jaya in special appearance. It is slated to release on April 1, 2016. While this is the first time Jaya, 67, and Balki have teamed up for any film, Amitabh has worked with the director before in Cheeni Kum, Paa, Shamitabh. Big B had a guest appearance in Balki’s wife Gauri Shindey’s directorial debut English Vinglish.

Sharing his experience on working with Balki for the movie, Big B wrote on his blog last year, “I work... I work with the wife... I work for R Balki... for his new film that he makes with Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Kapoor... called Ki and Ka... and if you know anything about Balki, you will realise that his titles are most fascinating..This is a guest appearance, where we play ourselves, in our own home.”
