Not many know that Kareena Kapoor Khan’s casting opposite husband Saif Ali Khan in Happy Ending was an impromptu decision. The film’s director duo, Raj-DK, explain that it happened when she travelled to the US to visit Saif while he was shooting for the film there.
Raj says, “Once Saif came on board, we had Kareena in mind. She was always one of our potential candidates for that role. It would be interesting to watch a real-life couple doing something else on screen. So we pitched it to her when she came to visit Saif and she liked it a lot.”
Considering Saif and Kareena have not being keen on working together, we ask if convincing her was easy. “People keep talking about real-life couples not working together on screen, but the way we have written the script takes that into consideration. It’s not a typical off-screen couple being paired together,” says Raj, adding, “It’s been written with a lot of wit. Plus, it’s something that an actor of her calibre would love to do because, usually, she won’t get a full-length role like this."
Ask if Kareena also has a song in the film and Raj says, “It’s all in the works right now.” Besides her, actors like Kalki Koechlin and Preity Zinta also have cameos in the film. Ileana D’Cruz plays the lead role opposite Saif. “We thought we will keep a lid on all the cameo and other roles, but somehow, they kept coming out (in the press),” adds the co-director. The film is likely to release around March-April next year.
