Kashmir students disrupt Haider shooting

Schedule of Vishal Bhardwaj’s next film got disturbed due to protests against hoisting of the tricolour.

The shooting of filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj’s next, Haider, which is set against the backdrop of Kashmir of the ’90s, was disrupted on Sunday, after a group of Kashmir University students started shouting anti-India slogans at the university’s campus in Srinagar. The film was being shot on the university premises.

Police arrested a few students and apparently had to use force to bring the situation under control. The trouble started when students watching the shoot objected to the hoisting of the Indian national flag in one of the scenes. The disturbance and noise rose to such a level that it got difficult for the crew to work and the shoot had to be aborted for the day.

The incident has also been reported on the Kashmir University Students’ Union (which was banned in 2010) Facebook page, with people objecting to the tricolour hoisting on the campus. However, Khawar Jamsheed, the line producer of the film, denies the news saying, “There was no protest. The bunker didn’t even have a flag, it only had a flagpole. The students were hooting and, as the scene required silence, Vishal sir decided to shoot that bit elsewhere.”

Haider features Shahid Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor playing the lead roles. The movie is believed to be Bhardwaj’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s famous tragedy, Hamlet.
