It may not have done too well in India, but My Name Is Khan became very popular abroad and just how popular? The film has been declared eligible for the best known film awards across the globe - the Academy awards.

Director-producer Karan Johar said, "MNIK started off as a movement and it's heartening to hear that today it's in the broad list of films eligible to be in the running in all categories. It's wonderful to know that people all over the world have loved MNIK so much that they felt it should be eligible enough to be an entry," he told Mid-Day.

SRK The Karan Johar film that saw Shah Rukh Khan playing the lead as an autistic, essentially deals with racism faced by Indians. The film had great expectations to live up due to the chemistry between the lead couple - SRK and Kajol. But the film just about scraped through the box office, barely recovering its cost. The last time an SRK film got nominated for the Oscars was Paheli; we know what happened with that, let's hope MNIK doesn't suffer the same fate!

Peepli [Live] has been nominated from India as an entry to the Oscars in the foreign film category and MNIK comes with Hollywood and other films.
