The makers of Jannat 2 might have known about the illegal guns trade in North India, but they would never have imagined being offered such guns by the local crowd where they were shooting their film.
“It was a border village at Haryana. The shoot was held up. Some guns, which were to be used as props, were not on the set because the truck carrying them was stuck in traffic. The crowd was getting restless seeing no action on the sets and to our surprise, some came forward and offered us their guns,” says Deshmukh.
The film is the sequel of the 2008 hit Jannat, and will see Emraan Hashmi play an illegal gun trader with Esha Gupta as his love interest.
Deshmukh maintains it is scary when you discover that half the crowd surrounding your shoot is armed with weapons. So the production team preferred not to squabble with them, keeping the safety of the whole unit in mind. “Almost 50 per cent of the crowd had weapons hidden under their clothes. There were no arguments on the sets that day,” says Deshmukh, adding, “They were mostly carrying handmade guns.
We were stunned and amused to see them. We thanked them, but declined their offer gracefully as our props had arrived by then.”
