This Valentines Day, HT City traces the love graph in Bollywood films in the past decade and how it has undergone a sea change, right from dialogues, to songs, scripts and even characters. While in 2000, love was about simplicity, in 2011 films explore the open-minded approach towards relationships, be it getting divorced, having pre-marital sex or getting into multiple relationships.
We ask the industrywalas whether this bold content is forced or is it the need of the hour. “Love is now a lot more practical. The slow poetic romance is gone. The idea of love is more real and in your face now. It is more like ‘your place or mine’ at the end of the very first date,” says actor Chitrangada Singh, the leading lady in Yeh Saali Zindagi.
Director Alankrita Srivastava explored a different aspect of a woman’s life in her film Turning 30. With its bold interpretation of a modern independent woman, the film is being considered as a milestone in Indian cinema.
“Relationships have evolved. The realisation of ‘happily ever after’ has changed. Today’s generation is really fractured in their thoughts. You don’t know where to draw the line. Films like LSD, Turning 30, Band Baaja Baaraat, Break Ke Baad and Dev D are interesting takes on modern relationships,” says Srivastava. Filmmaker Madhur Bhand-arkar feels, “What we show on screen is inspired from today’s youth. If change is for good, I don’t see any problem with it.”
