Film: Madras Cafe
Cast: John Abraham (last seen in Shooutout at Wadala), Nargis Fakhri (last seen in Rockstar; 2012)
Storyline: An Indian army officer is sent to Sri Lanka on a covert mission. A chance meeting with a journalist leads him to some information that will change the course of his life.
Director: Shoojit Sircar (Last directed Vicky Donor; 2011) The sleeper hit earned the film’s actors — Annu Kapoor and Dolly Ahluwalia — National Awards. It marked the debut of John Abraham as a producer and Ayushmann Khurrana as an actor.
Music: Shantanu Moitra
The film’s music has been called “nuanced” and “classy” by critics, but none of the tracks have topped charts as such.

Controversies/stunts
The makers denied rumours of the film’s story having anything to do with Rajeev Gandhi’s assassination or the LTTE, although it was the movie’s initial title (Jaffna) that led to the speculations. After a Tamil outfit asked for the film to be banned, the Madras High Court had to intervene.

Marketing/hype
Even though this is Nargis Fakhri’s second film after Rockstar, her casting hasn’t led to a lot of buzz. Lead actor John — a member of the ‘Rs100 cr club’— admitted that he’d be happy even if the film made Rs 20 cr. No pressure then, we guess.

Our assessment
Although the promo has grabbed enough eyeballs, the only disadvantage this film has to overcome is probably the fact that it releases just after the heavily promoted Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbai Dobaara and Chennai Express.

For the final verdict, look out for Anupama Chopra’s review tomorrow in the Watch & Listen page of  Hindustan Times’ Do!section.
