Unperturbed by the tepid response her steamy scenes and high-end prosthetics got in her first co-production Hisss (2010), actor Mallika Sherawat is gung ho about producing another film soon.
Claiming that the younger generation in India and almost everyone abroad loved Hisss, Sherawat says, “I’m kicked with the response, and I will be producing another film very soon. I’m going through several scripts, but I haven’t finalised anything yet.” “There are so many subjects that interest me. Most of them are inspired by hardcore Indian culture and beliefs like ‘nagins’ and their transformation into human beings. So, if something like that comes my way, I will produce it. Maybe, I will even act in it,” she adds.
The actor seems to be heavily inspired by one of the most popular ‘nagins’ of Bollywood, Sridevi. “It takes some courage to get such topics back into movies. Of course, Sridevi became so popular with Nagin and its sequel Nagina but that was almost 20 years ago. Nagin as a subject has always enthralled people. I thought this was the right time to re-introduce the audience to the snake-lady. I think the make-up, the story and the music was fantastic,” says Sherawat.
The film, despite being promoted all over, including the Cannes Film Festival, proved to be a dud at the box-office. Sherawat retorts, “I think except the Indian critics, everyone liked the film. Nagin is a part of Indian belief. My film was talked about everywhere. I received several mails stating how much people enjoyed watching Hisss. It doesn’t matter if the critics didn’t find it worth their time and energy.”
