Veteran Bollywood actor Mithun Chakraborty, who has been nominated as one of the five Rajya Sabha members for the All India Trinamool Congress, is yet to come to terms with the announcement made by the party’s leader and West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee.

And even though he is elated with the news, he maintains that he will never put his acting career on the backburner.

“My first priority will always be acting, as it has earned me my bread and butter. I won’t ever leave it because it has given me my identity. My loyalties will always remain with the industry,” he says.

On January 18, Banerjee posted a statement on her official Facebook page that said, “In our State, five Rajya Sabha Members will be elected this time. One of these seats will be given to Shri Mithun Chakraborty from All India Trinamool Congress. Shri Chakraborty is a well-known film personality. He has devoted his life to the cause of cultural and social activities with great success. He is an asset not only of West Bengal, but also of the entire country. We are proud to nominate him. Falling short of words while reacting to this message, Chakraborty fumbles, before saying, “I don’t know how to react. I can never be a politician. I have always stood by the people and their rights and I am going to do the same.”

Ask him how he plans to balance his professional and political careers, and he says, “When I am acting, I am an actor. When I will go there, I’ll be a different man. As an actor, I have to justify the character’s demand. On the other side, I have to look into people’s well-being. Now there will be two people called Mithun Chakraborty in me.”
