Soderbergh’s action stint
There was news he is hanging up his boots for painting but that never happened. Instead Director Steven Soderbergh tried his hand at an action-thriller with Haywire, after having made movies such as What is Traffic, Sex Lies Videotapes and the Ocean’s franchise. “I always wanted to make a vintage action-thriller movie, like the early Bond films or Henry Palmer films. But one that has this different aesthetics,” says Soderbergh, adding: “And I saw Gina (Carano) on TV in this fight and started thinking ‘Why can’t she be Bond? Why not make a beautiful looking action film with a woman in the lead?”
Gina wasn’t a trained actor. Was that a problem? “We didn’t need a major in dramatic arts, she just needed to be cool. I saw her do a TV interview. She had a great vibe — genuine, unpretentious and incredibly watchable.”
This is Soderbergh’s third movie with a central female character. What’s drawing him towards female-led characters? “People just aren’t writing a lot of great roles for women,” he reasons, adding, “My next film, Bitter Pill, also has some great female characters.”
