My film has more muscle than Iron Man: Mahesh Bhatt
Mahesh Bhatt is confident his film will face zero competition from Marvel’s superhero franchisebollywood Updated: Apr 12, 2013 18:48 IST
Vishesh Films’ next release, Aashiqui 2, will release on the same day as Iron Man 3 (April 26). The makers of the film, however, aren’t too concerned by the clash.
“Aashiqui has managed to retain a spot in people’s minds for over two decades. I don’t think any other music album could sustain such popularity over such a long period of time. The audience we are catering to ensures that my film has more muscle than Iron Man (at the box office). Iron Man will have its own audience while Aashiqui 2 caters to true entertainment lovers,” says Mahesh Bhatt, who directed the original and is producing the sequel.
Even the trade doesn’t think that Aashiqui 2 faces any competition from the film that features Robert Downey Jr in the lead role. But the move has backfired in the past, when Priyadarshan’s Tezz (2012) was out on the same day as The Avengers and failed at the box office.
“If the films were of the same genre, talks of a clash might have mattered. Tezz and The Avengers were of the same genre, so there was a clash,” says trade analyst Amod Mehra.
Meanwhile, the Sunny Deol-starrer I Love NY (New Year) was also supposed to release on the same day, but the makers have postponed it to May 17, reportedly to avoid a clash with Iron Man 3. Trade analyst Komal Nahta argues, “That was because I Love NY (New Year) was not ready and the film’s post-production is still on. Secondly, both the films — Aashiqui 2 and I Love NY (New Year) — belong to T-Series. Aashiqui 2’s music is doing phenomenally well, so releasing it on April 26 was a wise decision as the songs will be at the peak of their popularity by April 20.”
