For a first-time host, Salman Khan seemed to have great fun at the Guild Awards on Saturday. The highlight of the event was his interaction with yesteryear superstar Hema Malini. After inviting her on stage, Salman asked Malini, who is a trained classical dancer, to show off some Bharatanatyam steps. She sportingly obliged and performed in front of the audience, which gave her a thunderous applause and a standing ovation.
Keeping the momentum alive, Salman told Malini that the song Hawa Ke Saath Saath (Seeta Aur Geeta; 1972) is his all-time favourite number, and asked if she would dance with him on the song? ‘With skates?’ asked Hema, to which Salman popped a huge skate-shaped prop. Both he and Hema stood on it and danced while lip-syncing the popular retro tune.
In his inimitable style, Salman Khan made his debut as an awards show host at Renault Star Guild Awards on Saturday. He kept the audience entertained and interacted with the celebrities, including Priyanka Chopra, Vidya Balan and Arjun Kapoor. But it was his interaction with Hema Malini that deserves special mention. Salman revealed how ‘Dream Girl’ Malini inspired him on many occasions since he was a child.
After inviting her on stage to present an award, Salman admitted to being a huge fan. He seemed shy around her. He said he was present on the sets of her 1972 film, Seeta Aur Geeta, before recalling that in the scene shot that day, Malini wore a shirt, trousers and a scarf, and had a tomboyish look for her part as Geeta.
As Malini blushed, Salman added that she struck a pose in that scene that he went on to adapt in his own body language. He even stepped off stage and sat on a chair to demonstrate what he was talking about, before giving her credit for what is now, his signature posture.
