Neetu Chandra, known for her sexy image, is concentrating on getting a simple girl-next-door image right these days. She says, “I want to do only meaningful cinema now.” Sources confirm that Shyam Benegal has cast the Bihar-born actor in a demure role for his next film, which is a love story based in Haryana. Although the actor doesn’t deny being cast, she says, “I will let the director and producers make the announcement first.”
However, she adds, “I love directors like Shyam Benegal, Dibakar Banerjee, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Pradeep Sarkar, who have kept Indianness alive in their scripts.” She points out that her favourite Benegal films range from Mandi (1983), which was a satire on politics and prostitution, to the more recent Well Done Abba (2010). She says, “What I love about his films is the strong storyline and even stronger female characters. See any of his films…they all have meaty roles for women. He is a great director.”
However, for the past three months she has been working on getting her new look right, working out and wearing Indian clothes to get into the character. She says, “I like Indian clothes and have added lovely Indian leading labels to my wardrobe recently.” She says, “I prefer doing films in Indian languages rather than running after English films. My first Bhojpuri production, Deswa that has been directed by my brother Nitin, is slated to release on November 18 and has already travelled to international film festivals.”
She adds, “I have invested all my savings in Deswa. We had our music launch in Mumbai recently and have gotten singers like Shreya Ghoshal, Sunidhi Chauhan, Sonu Nigam, Swanand Kirkire and Padmashree awardees Bharat Vyas and Sharada Sinha.”
The actor has also done an item number for the film, that has been choreographed by Ganesh Acharya.
