He has stopped bullets with mere brainpower, defied the laws of gravity and even cured a tumour by getting shot in the head. And now, Rajinikanth has a new near-impossible task to his credit — a website that runs without the Internet.
Two days ago, desimartini.com, a portal for Bollywood news, released a microsite, allaboutrajni, as a tribute to the legend. And fans are lapping it up, with the microsite already receiving over a lakh hits.
“We are always on the lookout for ways to create buzz in the movie space. That was the brief, and when the team came back with this idea about a microsite dedicated to Rajinikanth, we immediately went ahead with it,” says Yashodhara Lal, business head at desimartini.com, adding that the whole idea is to get fans to say talk about this innovative idea.
For this reason alone, she refuses to discuss the process of how a website works offline.
On the site itself, Rajni claims that you need to earn the right to enter. And you prove yourself by disconnecting your comp from its net connection and running purely on “Rajni power”.
Once in, fans are treated to a series of facts on the superstar’s life, his biography and yes, even some Rajinikanth jokes. But don’t try to re-connect once you’ve entered the site.
In true Rajni humour, a message pops up that reads, “
! That was unexpected. To keep browsing, switch off your Internet.”
And just like Dhanush’s Kolaveri di this site is going viral fast and is a hit even among fans abroad. So has there been any reaction from the man himself?
“Not yet, but it’s nothing more than a respectful tribute to him,” says Lal. Also, the team is in the process of optimising the content for the mobile platform, thanks to its growing popularity. But that will take some time. Lal says, “We never expected it to become so huge so soon. It took us by surprise.
