Out to break the jinx: Movies open during Ramzan

Three Hindi movies with major buzz — bold sequels Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum, Jism 2 and Gangs of Wasseypur - Part 2 — will hit theatres on July 27, August 3 and August 8 respectively. This marks end of the Bollywood superstition of staying away from big-buck releases during the holy fasting month of Ramzan.

“The Ramzan period is generally considered lean in the industry. Earlier, we’d only see gap fillers releasing during this time, the ones which didn’t get any other release date. But the upcoming releases show that filmmakers have become more confident,” says trade analyst Atul Mohan. Adds trade guru Joginder Tuteja, “It is a calculated and intelligent decision on the part of filmmakers. It’s a win-win situation as they have limited competition during this time.”

Distributor Joginder Mahajan makes another point: “Most of the business today comes from multiplexes which have corporates and educated viewers who don’t care about superstition before coming to theatres.”

The makers of the films are also confident. “We know our film is bound to work in this period too,” says Girish Johar of Balaji Motion Pictures, makers of Kyaa Super Kool.

Vikram Malhotra of Viacom 18 Motion Pictures, the distributors of Gangs of Wasseypur, says, "Indian audiences are now breaking out of traditional shackles and stepping into cinemas even during the conventionally lean or taboo periods." Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, who wrote Jism 2 says, "A good film will work irrespective of any environmental constraints." Other Ramzan releases include From Sydney With Love, Chittagong and Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana, before Salman Khan’s Ek Tha Tiger sweeps them all with its Eid release on Aug 15.
