Filmmaker and producer Anurag Kashyap has accused the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) of functioning like mafia as his film Udta Punjab remains stuck between revising and examining committees.

Kashyap found himself at the centre of a controversy over the Shahid Kapoor-starrer when he accused CBFC board chief, Pahlaj Nihalani, of having an iron fist over the board.

“It (the board) is like mafia. When Bombay Velvet was in revising committee, people from examining committee were there , which is wrong. So for Raman Raghav, we went straight to the revising committee. They suggested changes and we accepted, but this made Pahlaj Nihalani unhappy that he didn’t have control over things,” Kashyap alleged in an interview to Times Now.

When asked why he hadn’t approached Shyam Benegal instead, Kashyap replied, “We can’t go to Shyam Benegal because he doesn’t have any power to influence. He has submitted his report but it is not being implemented.”

The yet to be certified Udta Punjab is a dark drama on the drug menace of Punjab. Since its trailer released, the film has been stirring the hornet’s nest for its content and portrayal of the state.

In another interview with NDTV, Anurag detailed what actually transpired.

“When Udta Punjab was screened for the examining committee, they said ‘we are referring this to revising committee’. When the tribunal sought the objections in writing, they were told by Nihalani’s office that the objections had been sent by speed post. That speed post never reached the tribunal. Then we had no option but to go back to Nihalani. This time he asked us to delete references to Punjab, elections MLA and MLC. But we never got this in writing. Without the written objection, we cannot move further. We can’t approach tribunal, can’t approach the court.”

The CBFC has reportedly asked for 89 cuts, including dropping all references to Punjab.
