When it comes to his biopic, Sher Singh Rana, 35, who shot dacoit-turned-politician Phoolan Devi, is clear about who he wants to play the lead.

“Leander (Paes) is my first choice but if that doesn’t happen then I want Ajay Devgn to play me in the movie… Leander even met me in the Patiala House lock up and talked to me for one hour. He wanted to observe my basic walking and talking style. He said he considers me a patriot and wants to do the movie only for patriotism” Rana says with a smile while speaking from the other side of the glass pane at the Rohini jail, where he is currently imprisoned.

“Though Leander’s accent is best suited for the movie (as it is going to be made in English and later dubbed in Hindi), Ajay has that intensity in his eyes that needs no introduction,” he adds.

And what about the role of his beloved in the film, we ask. “I had two girlfriends – Simran and Ayesha. While Simran’s face is similar to that of Preity Zinta’s; Ayesha is the mirror image of Katrina Kaif. But they have very minute presence in the story,” he says.

Ajay DevgnBased on his forthcoming autobiography, the yet untitled biopic will be helmed by an Indian origin Hollywood director. What are his expectations from it?

“The movie will bring out Phoolan Devi’s truth. She has been portrayed falsely till date on screen. Shekhar Kapur only showed her positive side in Bandit Queen,” says the accused.

“I also want my escape from Tihar Jail (2005) to be highlighted in the movie which is considered to be the fourth greatest escape in Asia and people should know I did it all for patriotism,” adds Rana, who escaped Tihar to get back the ashes of Prithivraj Chauhan from Afghanistan.

Rana has penned an open ending for his movie.

“The audience will decide the ending of the story, as it questions our system which helps a dacoit like Phoolan Devi to become a politician and a patriot like me to suffer behind bars,” says the accussed, who is also harbouring dreams of trying his luck at reality shows.

“In the coming time, I’d love go to Bigg Boss and other such reality shows,” he says.

And what about acting? “I’d like to act but it’s not possible right now. It’ll take about a year more for the case and I don’t want any delay in the film because of that,” says Rana.

He also informs that “Mira Nair also wants to know about me and corporate houses are interested in the project.”

“We are talking with other Indian origin Hollywood directors and announce the movie in July-August. Overseas writers are writing the movie currently in Delhi,” he adds.

Prod him about his autobiography and he says, “I wrote the book in three months and it documents my life from my birth till now and includes all incidents from the Phoolan Devi murder case, my escape to Afghanistan to get back Prithviraj Chauhan’s ashes up to my surrender in April 2006.”

“The title of the book is not yet decided. I wrote it in Hindi but it’s coming out in English,” he adds.

The self-confessed ‘patriot’ also announces he will “bring back the ashes of Bahadur Shah Zafar from Burma and those of Subhash Chandra Bose from Japan.”

“I’ll do it for sure. I want to fulfill Bahadur Shah Zafar’s last wishes. But I don’t want to do indulge in any crime now. It’s been a log time that I’ve been suffering in pain (while looking at the jail). I want to work for the country now and do social service and serve the community,” he adds.

Life now is as calm as a river for Rana.

“I read books and newspapers in the jail library. I don’t interact much to anyone in jail. I do feel suffocated at times inside but may be that’s in my destiny,” he says.
