Trust Ram Gopal Varma with giving quirky replies and he seldom disappoints. The irreverent filmmaker talked about his latest film, Department at the TV chat show, Front Row With Anupama Chopra, on Star World.

Talking about the film that releases today, Varma said, “Department is not a really real film, neither is it absolutely mainstream, it has realistic characters and realistic situations, but they are packaged in a very graphic novel kind of a way.”

When one of the audience members in the show asked when does experimentation become arrogance, RGV said, “There is a very thin line between arrogance and conviction. All the movies I have made till now are because of my conviction in the story, may it be Satya, Rangeela or for that matter Aag. If the films work, people call it conviction, if it doesn’t work people call it arrogance.”

Varma’s film grabbed limelight recently for having explicit sensual scenes. Talking about the same, the 43-year-old director says, “They are for voyeuristic purposes, I like to see frames like that. Naseer’s character is a mix of danger and sensuality, such angles help accentuate that.” Varma’s fascination with the theme for power was also discussed on the show that airs every Friday at 8:30pm. “I personally get excited about power, conflicts, the larger than life characters, especially the dark side of a human being, I get bored with romcoms for example, I don’t like to see simple people and simple things,” he muses.

Talking about hits and flops in Bollywood, Varma says, “I write my own stories mostly so you can blame me, so whatever you don’t like is mine. My failures belong to me but my success belongs to everyone... My sincerity in Satya and Aag was the same. I believed in both the films, one worked one didn’t.”
