Rajkumar Santoshi’s Ghayal (1990) was one of the biggest hits of Sunny Deol’s career. And although the director insists that he was one of the first to be approached to direct the sequel, the actor’s spokesperson denies the news.
“Sunny first asked me to direct the second part of Ghayal. He came to my house, but I don’t have a story. I don’t want to do a sequel just for the heck of it. I told him very honestly that if anybody else has a story, then he should go ahead with that. That’s when he started trying to make it with others,” says Santoshi.
While Sunny’s hunt for a director to helm the National Award-winning film’s sequel has been making news for a while, Santoshi is uncertain about whether the actor even has a story in hand. He says, “I am not aware of whether, as of now, Sunny has a story.”
Ask him if he would be interested in directing the sequel if Sunny approaches him with an independent script, and he says, “I am a writer-director. I have never directed someone else’s story. If someone else has written it, then why would it come to me? I won’t be a part of it,” adds the filmmaker.
Even though Sunny remained unavailable for a comment, his spokesperson calls Santoshi’s claims false, saying, “Sunny has not approached Rajkumar Santoshi for Ghayal at all, and he is never going to do so.”
