In 2007, Ranbir Kapoor’s Saawariya and Shah Rukh Khan’s Om Shanti Om clashed at the box office, as both films released on the Diwali weekend. Six years later, history seems set to repeat itself. If trade conjecture is anything to go by, Shah Rukh and Ranbir’s upcoming films — Farah Khan’s Happy New Year and Anurag Basu’s Jagga Jasoos, respectively — may clash at the box office again on the same festive weekend in 2014. Incidentally, all the major festival slots next year, except Diwali, have been blocked by other films.
“I will keep my film ready for release by September next year. After that, it will be the producer’s call to release it on Diwali or whenever they want. But the fact is that we haven’t taken a call on the release date yet,” says Anurag.
Farah’s next too (the first shooting schedule of which is already over) is expected to be ready around the same time next year. However, when asked, the filmmaker lashes out, saying, “If the trade people know more than Shah Rukh and me, let them only shoot the film. We haven’t decided on the release date. Who knows, we might come before Diwali. Let us take the final call first.”
We had recently reported that Ranbir had preponed the shoot of Jagga Jasoos (also his first co-production), in an alleged attempt to release it before the numerous other detective films — Detective Byomkesh Bakshy, Bobby Jasoos, Samrat & Co., and Mr Joe B Carvahlo — hit the big screen. Trade sources say that since Detective Byomkesh Bakshy and Bobby Jasoos are both expected towards the end of 2014, and Ranbir’s Bombay Velvet will release on Christmas next year, he is likely to schedule Jagga Jasoos for Diwali.
