Although Irrfan’s National Award win for Tigmanshu Dhulia’s Paan Singh Tomar (2012) was widely talked about for being well-deserved, actor Ayushmann Khurrana says Ranbir Kapoor was no less worthy. Ranbir had played a deaf-mute boy in Anurag Basu’s Barfi! (2012) and his performance was, according to Khurrana, exceptional. “Irrfan was the most deserving candidate. But even Ranbir Kapoor should have got one,” says Ayushman.
The actor’s debut film as an actor, Vicky Donor (2012), directed by Shoojit Sircar too bagged three National Awards (Best Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment, Best Supporting Actors for Annu Kapoor and Dolly Ahluwalia).
Ask him whether he regrets not getting an award himself and he says, “Had there been a category for debutants, then maybe I would (have regretted). I have a long way to go to get a National Award for acting.”
The actor may not have bagged the national honour, but in the past few months, he’s won several other awards in the best debutant and best singer categories.
After delivering the hit, ‘Paani da rang’ in Vicky Donor, the actor has sung a couple of songs in his upcoming film, Nataunki Saala. “To write a song, you can draw inspirations from anything. You just need to be happy,” says Ayushman.
The actor is currently shooting for Yash Raj Films’ yet-untitled film. Directed by Nupur Asthana, it’s a romantic comedy about struggling lovers. Sonam Kapoor will play the lead opposite him.
The actor reveals that he is singing a song for this film too. However, this time he’s not composing or writing the number. “Raghu Dixit has composed the music for it. We have just recorded the scratch,” says Ayushmann.
