She is in no mood to venture into new territory unprepared. Rani Mukerji might be one of the most talented actors around, but if she ever takes up direction, she wants to “work towards” it. For some time now, rumours have been rife that she has plans to turn director, possibly with a Yash Raj Films production.

“I don’t have any such plans. I am happy being an actor,” says Rani, adding that direction is not a simple job because it comes with a lot of responsibilities. “I have been asked this question several times, probably because I have a solid body of work behind me as an actor.”

Rani contends she isn’t ready for direction yet. “But I wouldn’t say, ‘I can’t do it.’ In the future, if I ever feel like directing, I will first work towards it,” says the actor.

Rani MukerjiAccording to her, donning the director’s hat demands expertise over a wide range of subjects. "It includes knowledge of music and other parts of the movie-making process like editing, sound effects, casting, locations and directing a particular scene. You have to have a vision of the entire film. A director directs 100 people and not just actors," she says.

For now, Rani is happy being an actor. “If I get a great subject to make a film, I will take it up to see if it works. But that’s only for a later stage, when I get married, have kids and settle down,” she says.

So is the No One Killed Jessica actor doing an item number in Sajid Khan’s Housefull 2? “They are just talks. I am not doing any item number,” she says. If someone wants to work with me, they get in touch with me. But Sajid hasn’t called.”
