After romantic flick Mod (2011), filmmaker Nagesh Kukunoor is now readying to direct a hard-hitting action film on boxing for which he has signed Roadies anchor-turned-actor Rannvijay Singh in the lead. “It’s a film on boxing. It’s a very uplifting film, based on how the underdog wins in the end. Unlike my other films, this has some dark undertones,” says Kukunoor.
The director maintains that the idea of making a film on this subject was lying dormant in his mind, but he had kept it on hold as he was looking for an actor who would fit best the lead character.
“After finishing a soft romantic film, I wanted to do something very hard and edgy. The fights that you will see are going to be very real and gritty,” reveals Kukunoor, adding, “ There are many boxing films like Martin Scorsese’s Raging Bull (1980) and the Rocky series that have been made. I want mine to be as memorable.”
Kukunoor reiterates that though he has always been a fan of heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, the film isn’t inspired by his career trajectory. “Tyson’s animalistic approach, his viciousness and destructive behaviour have always been appealing. But I haven’t been inspired by Tyson,” says Kukunoor.
Ask what influenced him to rope in Rannvijay, and he says, “I noticed that Rannvijay is an incredible sportsman. He is a national-level basketball player and rides bikes. While working with him on Mod, I remembered that I have this script shelved, and that he would best fit this role,” explains Kukunoor.
