Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali is known to be a perfectionist, sparing no expense for elaborate sets and costumes for his movies. And for his upcoming film, Ram Leela, he recently made his two female stars, Deepika Padukone and Richa Chadda, work the whole day only to shoot one scene. The actors ended up shooting the scene 21 times, since there were that many retakes.
“We started shooting during the day and got done pretty late in the night, when we finally stopped at 21 takes. It was very taxing. Sir (Bhansali) is a perfectionist, so until he gets what he wants he will keep shooting. Both Deepika and I were tired, but we had to shoot until he liked it and let us go,” says Richa.
The sequence was also exhausting since it was a ‘single shot’ scene. It’s a shoot where there are no cuts and needs to be shot in its entirety in one go, with no room to dub dialogues later. In spite of having a solid theatre background, where such scenes are the norm, Richa found it difficult to shoot for it. “It’s difficult to accomplish, especially if it is a long scene. The camera doesn’t stop in between. I have worked on the stage before but even then I had trouble doing the scene. It was quite challenging,” says Richa.
The film is said to be an adaptation of Shakespeare’s epic love story Romeo and Juliet, set in violent times and stars Ranveer Singh in the lead. Bhansali has almost wrapped up the shooting and the actors have apparently started dubbing as well. “Nearly 99.9 per cent of the shoot is complete and I have started dubbing for it,” says Richa. The film is set to hit theatres on November 15.
