Being in front of the camera is not enough for some female actors, with a number of them turning producers this year

Ameesha Patel
Ameesha launched her production house Ameesha Patel Productions last month and her first film will go on the floors next month. She has signed David Dhawan to direct the film. “I will be acting in the film for sure. I am yet to decide the lead actor. The budget of my film is 30-35 crores,” she says. Ameesha, 36, has also finalized her second film that she will start later this year. “Once my first film goes on the floor, I will make an announcement about the second,” she adds.

Preity Zinta
Preity is all set to make one film under her recently launched production house PZNZ Media this year. She has signed director Prem Soni for the film. Zinta had earlier done an item number for Soni’s film Main Aur Mrs Khanna. “The script is very exciting. It is a lighthearted rom com. I am doing some outside productions right now. But I will make an announcement soon,” says Zinta, 36, who is thinking of signing A graders for the roles in her film.

Dia Mirza
The actor launched her production house Born Free Entertainment with actor Zayed Khan and the two actors have already started shooting their first film — Love, Breakups, Zindagi. The film is directed by Mirza’s rumoured boyfriend Sahil Singha. “It is a romantic comedy. Sahil gave us a joint narration and we loved the idea. I have been learning the ropes of film production for a while now. I will give a chance to young directors,” Dia, 29, says.

Lara Dutta
Lara’s first production, Chalo Dilli, with a cameo by hubby Mahesh Bhupathi, released earlier this year. This small budget film, starring Lara and Vinay Pathak in the lead, did average business at the box office. “I’m in love with filmmaking. I have explored the acting bit enough and now I can move on to making films. I will also get into script writing and direction soon,” Lara, 33, says.

Katrina Kaif
There’s a buzz going around that Kat will turn producer to launch her younger sister Isabella Kaif in Bollywood. Isabella is doing a course in acting in Mumbai and has been spotted at filmy parties and award functions with her sister. In the past, Kat has expressed that she would like to turn producer. According to reports, Kaif is in talks with big production houses to co-produce her film. The grapevine has it that Kat, 26, may buy the remake rights of Hollywood film Private Benjamin.

Others who have turned producers
Actor Tisca Chopra who has worked in Taare Zameen Par and Firaaq has decided to turn producer. However, the actor is tight lipped about her first project. "I will work on a subject that has a good core concept. It is too early to talk about it now," she says.

Actor Neetu Chandra produced a bhojpuri film Deswa last year. The film was directed by her brother. The actor donned the producer's hat for a Bhojpuri film because she wanted to give "Bhojpuri cinema a facelift".

Actor Shilpa Shetty, too, had launched her banner S2 Global Productions in 2008 and announced that she will soon start making commercial films.
