A big name in the world of fashion and Bollywood costume designing, Rocky S is now venturing into filmmaking. The designer, in association with E-Sense Motion Pictures, will be producing two commercial B-town films next year.
“It has been 20 years of styling for 350 movies for me, so I need to progress and go towards something else. I’m good with production; direction is not my cup of tea,” he says, adding that he is open to all genres of films. “I want to take up all kinds of cinema, but for the time being, it’s going to be completely commercial. We are working on a comedy and a fashion-related film,” says Rocky, adding that Mushtaq Sheikh (who has films like Om Shanti Om, 2007 and Billu, 2009, to his credit) is already working on the scripts.
Ask him if his film on fashion will be an exposé of sorts (like Madhur Bhandarkar’s 2008 flick, Fashion) and he says, “Not at all. It’s going to be very commercial and funny. I want this one project to be really high on fashion. People also need to see the other side (of the fashion industry), which involves hard work and pain. If I can bring that out, it will be great.”
As the designer prepares for his new role, he says that he is putting all his energies into filmmaking now. “I have stopped taking up styling work. I am totally focusing on production. Both the projects will go on the floors only mid-next year,” says Rocky, adding that he would love to cast close pal Bipasha Basu. “It all depends on what the character is. I love Bips. She is my closest friend. She will be the first preference if she fits the part,” he says.
Where are the films?
His supposed directorial debut has been in the news for a long time now. At one point, he was also writing a script based on a story by Rabindranath Tagore.
Two years ago, reports suggested that Manish will direct a film for Vashu Bhagnani and not Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions. Later, he apparently refuted the reports.
Earlier this year, he reportedly stated that his directorial debut will begin soon, if all goes as planned. However, there’s been no headway on the project yet.
