Akshay Kumar’s Rowdy Rathore is his second consecutive film after Housefull 2 this year to have crossed the Rs 100 mark at the box office. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh says, “The film crossed this mark at the end of the second weekend. It has performed exceptionally well at both single screens as well as multiplexes. The second weekend collections have come up to Rs 22.9 cr, taking the total to Rs 101.5 cr net.”
Siddharth Roy Kapoor, MD – Studios, Disney UTV Motion Pictures, says, “This is our first Rs 100 cr film. We had crossed Rs 90 cr with Rajneeti (2010) earlier. There is a party planned this weekend with the cast and crew to celebrate the film’s success.”
After a rather unmemorable 2011, Akshay is back in the big league with Rowdy Rathore’s success.
Trade analyst Komal Nahta says, “For Akshay, it’s a double whammy this year. Two back to back box-office biggies raking in R100 each have put the actor back in the spotlight.”
Besides Rowdy Rathore, the two English releases, Prometheus and Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted made it a crowded weekend at the theatres.
Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted, which opened in 200 screens in 3D, saw an 80 per cent growth on Saturday. Vishal Malhotra, COO, Viacom 18 Motion Pictures says, “The film has crossed Rs 5 cr at the box office which is next only to the opening figures of Tintin (2011) and Kung Fu Panda 2 (2011) among English language animation films.”
