Karan Johar paid Kangana Ranaut a compliment when he said “she is an exceptional talent “ in a recent interview with Barkha Dutt. But he followed it up by saying “she clearly learned those 12 lines and came”.

Karan was referring to an episode of his talk show Koffee With Karan, in which actor Kangana Ranaut accused him of promoting nepotism in Bollywood and being a part of the “movie mafia”.

The episode ignited a major debate both in and out of the industry, with many taking sides. Kangana meanwhile, was mostly lauded for her forthrightness.

Karan Johar and Kangana Ranaut were involved in a debate on nepotism in an episode of his talk show.

But in the Barkha Dutt interview — which touched on topics like Karan’s sexuality (“There’s no point in saying those three words,” he said), and controversial news anchor Arnab Goswami’s suggestion that Johar was involved in his quitting his Times Now job — Johar said that he “felt attacked” in the KWK episode and was only “defending” himself.

“I felt attacked, why should I apologise? She had an opinion and I respect that, but I had my opinion to give as well,” he said.

“She had an opinion, she is an exceptional talent and I have always said that. She has her opinion and she said it. Two weeks later, I was given a platform and I said what I had to. I don’t know what to say, what she meant, whereas I have never crossed paths with her beyond here and there. She decided to choose me, to make her point which is fine,” he said.

Here, Karan is referring to another interview, the one in March, in which he said that Kangana was playing the victim card on his chat show.

Karan also said that though he had forgotten to invite Kangana for his last party, he would invite her to his next one.
