She has spent five years in Bollywood, and has delivered several hits. The daughter of veteran actor Shatrughan Sinha, Sonakshi Sinha has carved her own niche, and is one of the most sought-after actors today. She talks about doing out-of-the-box films, how she cannot be competitive, and more.

You are doing a biopic on Haseena Parkar (underworld don Dawood Ibrahim’s sister). It is a sensitive subject. Are you prepared?

The initial response has been great. It’s an intense and complex character, so I’ll have to get the diction and the nuances right. I’ll attend workshops and probably meet Parkar’s daughters, who she was closest to, in order to understand her better.

You’re part of another woman-centric film. Is signing such films a conscious decision?

Indian cinema is in a transitional phase, and the audience has become more open to such films. The only conscious decision I’ve made is to sign good scripts, and do roles. Whether it’s a women-centric film or a full-blown commercial movie, my role has to be great. I’m proud of the work I’ve done so far, but everyone always seems to expect more from me. That’s a huge compliment, and I’ve taken it positively.

Do you consider anyone your competition in the industry?

Every actor is competition today. But I’ve never been affected by what others do. I’m very happy doing my work, and not getting into other people’s business. I’m not a competitive person, and I haven’t changed even after doing 14 films. It is important to have the right attitude in this industry, and I’ve realised that it is only your dedication and hard work that will take you places, and not poking your nose in other people’s business.

You’ve always been vocal about your thoughts on social media. Don’t you think you risk being misinterpreted?

If I’m misinterpreted, it’s their (the people who misinterpret) problem, not mine. I’m a very positive person, and I think I can take things in my stride, and handle them my way, which is exactly what I do.
