Their last collaboration, Rowdy Rathore (2012), was a blockbuster, so it isn’t surprising that there is buzz surrounding Akshay Kumar and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s next project together, Gabbar. There has also been quite a lot of speculation about the leading lady to be paired opposite Akshay. For some time, names like Shruti Haasan and Amala Paul did the rounds, but it seems Shraddha Kapoor has won this race.
The makers have roped in the star of the sleeper hit Aashiqui 2 as the film’s heroine. “The call was taken by Sanjay sir. He was keen to see Akshay pair up with Shraddha because they have never worked together. The audience too will see a new couple on the big screen. Plus, he was happy with Shraddha’s performance in Aashiqui 2. The film goes on the floors early next year,” says an insider.
Akshay has teamed up with fresh faces in the recent past. He has worked with Kajal Agarwal in Special 26 and will soon be seen paired opposite Tamannah Bhatia in his upcoming film, It’s Entertainment.
Directed by Krish, Gabbar is a remake of Ramana, the 2002 Tamil hit. It is the story of a college professor who fights corruption with the help of his students. The film is slated to release on Independence Day in 2014 when it might clash with other big projects like Kabir Khan’s next with Saif Ali Khan and Ajay Devgn’s Singham 2. Despite repeated attempts, Akshay and Bhansali couldn’t be reached for a comment.
