After the roaring success of Munni… and Sheila…, the latest item song to hit the charts today is The Mutton Song..., from the movie Love Ka The End. Composed by Ram Sampath, sung by Krishna Beura and picturised on Shraddha Kapoor and Taaha Shah, the song is touted to be the next big thing. “This song is different from other item songs where women are objectified and ogled at by men. In Mutton…, there’s a role reversal where the women are objectifying men and having fun at their cost,” says Sampath.
Ask him if he is worried that with lyrics like ‘mera jism, mera badan, main hoon taaza mutton’, the song might rub the listeners the wrong way, and he replies, “I’m sure the people will understand the quirkiness and sarcasm in the song and will take it in the right spirit”.
The music composer also feels that composing item songs give a chance to explore the diversity in the genre of dance music: He says, “Hindi movies have been known for their amazing dance tracks. As a composer, I love this genre and nothing is more thrilling than composing for a song that everyone can dance to.”
Sampath, who started his career composing jingles for adverstisments and is also composing for Aamir Khan Productions’ Delhi Belly, says that he is selective about the projects he works on. He says, “I still feel that I belong to the advertisement fraternity and choose movies that have exciting scripts. Also, for maintaining cohesiveness of sound, I prefer that I compose the background score too, besides the songs in any movie I work on.”
