Zee Cine Awards 2011 returned after a two-year ‘break’ that MD Punit Goenka attributed to the global economic slowdown. The night, featuring Bollywood’s best, was unveiled in the ballroom of Hotel Marina Bay Sands, Singapore, Asia’s largest integrated resort. The roar could be heard across the lion country.

Something fishy!
Siddhartha Mallya was not by her side but the connect was there. Deepika Padukone flew into Singapore on the Raja Machware Aurlines (read Kingfisher Airlines). The actor, who made a sparkling debut opposite Shah Rukh in Om Shanti Om, said that after quickly performing her act, she would take her seat in the audience to watch SRK on stage. “I’m waiting to do another film with him,” she smiled.

Love, actually
The Evergreen Duo Award went to Rishi and Neetu Kapoor who were taken on a musical flashback by the Dance India Dance kids and their mentors. Shah Rukh Khan rued that Neetu’s “change of heart” hadn’t come during Deewana. “I would have loved to act with you,” he told her shyly.

Lifetime Award
After Shatrughan Sinha got the Lifetime Achievement Award, daughter Sonakshi who was voted Best Debutante reminded him that he had once said she was his Lifetime Achievement Award. “I hope this award doesn’t change anything."

You are my Paro...
It was a promo moment and brought back Devdas memories. Aishwarya presented Shah Rukh with the Best Actor (Jury) Award for My Name Is Khan. He reacted by giving her a warm hug, then admitting that unless he won an award, it didn’t feel like he had worked. Aishwarya won a Best Actor Female (Jury) for Guzaarish. The Badshah made Hrithik Roshan serenade wife Sussanne to Sajda…, the Bachchan Bahu grooved to her chartbusters from Robot, Raavan and Action Replayy!!

Priyanka’s sixer!
Priyanka Chopra who had flown in on the day of the awards with her Don co-star, Shah Rukh Khan in his chartered jet, spent the day rehearsing her six avatars. She was to introduced the Best Films — My Name Is Khan, Once Upon A Time In Mumbai, Golmaal 3, Dabangg, Peepli (Live) and Rajneeti and her impersonations of Salman’s cop strut, SRK’s backpack travails and Emraan’s drunken revelry brought the house down. It was a preview to PC’s star turn in 7 Khoon Maaf. And it was only the stuck-on moustache that gave her a moment’s bother.

Hindi please, hum Hindustani
First time anchor Akshay Kumar looked chilled out and insisted on speaking only in Hindi. “No angrezi please, hum Hindustani,” he reasoned. It was a blockbuster debut for Arbaaz Khan as Dabangg swept nine awards.

Jumping Jack
Jump for joy... Anchors Akshay Kumar and Sajid Khan made all the winners do that with their trophies. Vidya Balan jumped too, dressed in a sari. Prachi Desai couldn’t in her short dress. So the Khiladi took the leap for the Best Supporting Actress. Wah!
