So far, Sonam Kapoor’s claim to fame in Bollywood might be more her style sense than anything else. But for her next film, Raanjhana, she is going that extra mile to brush up her acting skills. To prepare for her role as a student at Delhi’s acclaimed Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Sonam is practicing with the theatre groups associated with the university.

Sonam’s pairing opposite Tamil actor Dhanush has already got everyone talking. Now, she’s trying to get a first-hand understanding of street plays, which JNU is popular for. She is rehearsing with the Bahroop Arts Group and Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA) at the university.

A source close to Sonam says, “JNU is very popular for its street plays, and Sonam is rehearsing with these groups to get the hang of things. At the rehearsals of one of their plays, she’s undergoing the same practice routine as the rest of the actors.” Sonam is trying to pick up mannerisms for her role of a college girl from Delhi.

This isn’t the first time, of course, that she is playing a Delhi girl, having essayed a similar part in Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Delhi 6 (2009). But the part of a JNU student, however, will be a new challenge. Ask Sonam about her preparation and she says, “It’s completely new to me. These workshops will help me mould myself according to the sensibilities of the character.”
